This Regional ITS Architecture is a roadmap for transportation systems integration. The architecture was originally developed through a cooperative effort by the region's transportation agencies, covering all modes and all roads in the region. The architecture provides an overarching framework that spans all of the region's transportation organizations and individual transportation projects. Using the architecture, each transportation project can be viewed as an element of the overall transportation system, providing visibility into the relationship between individual transportation projects and ways to cost–effectively build an integrated transportation system over time.
The architecture addresses traffic management, transit management, emergency management, commercial vehicle operations, and transportation data management. It represents a shared vision of how transportation systems will work together in the future, sharing information and resources to provide a safer, more efficient, and more effective transportation system for travelers in the state. The architecture defines the functional relationships between the transportation systems across the state of Arizona, outside of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Region and the Pima Association of Governments (PAG) Region, but also inclusive of those regions to accommodate necessary connections to make a complete system.
This set of webpages represents various outputs from the 2024 Arizona Statewide Intelligent Transportation Systems Architecture Update. The architecture was updated through a cooperative effort by the state's transportation agencies, covering all Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) systems statewide, focused on areas of the state outside of the MAG and PAG Regions. A broad cross section of stakeholders from across the state was engaged in the update process to review work products, and to provide input and feedback.
The purpose of this statewide ITS architecture web site is to encourage use of the statewide ITS architecture in project planning, project development, and project design. The website provides a more user–friendly, accessible view of the architecture than the written documents alone.
The menu bar at left provides access to the information contained in the Regional Architecture Development for Intelligent Transportation (RAD–IT) software database. RAD–IT is a software tool that is used to document and present ITS architectures that are compatible with the Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC–IT). The updated architecture complies with the FHWA 23 CFR Rule 940 requirements, also known as "The Architecture Rule."
